Wyatt Hawn Russell (born July 10, 1986)[1] is an American actor and former professionalice hockeygoaltender. Since 2021, he has playedJohn Walker / U.S. Agent in theMarvel Cinematic Universe media franchise, beginning with theDisney+ seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and the filmThunderbolts* (2025). Russell has starred in various films includingEverybody Wants Some!! (2016),Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017),Overlord (2018) andNight Swim (2024), and also starred roles in television shows includingBlack Mirror (2016),Lodge 49 (2018–2019), andMonarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023–2024).

Early life

Russell was born on July 10, 1986, in Los Angeles, California, to actorsKurt Russell andGoldie Hawn.[1][2][3] He is a grandson of the late character actorBing Russell, paternal half-brother of Boston Russell, and maternal half-brother ofOliver Hudson andKate Hudson.[4]

Career

Ice hockey

Agoaltender, Russell playedjunior hockey for theRichmond Sockeyes,Langley Hornets,Coquitlam Express,Chicago Steel, andBrampton Capitals before enrolling to playcollegiate hockey for theChargers at theUniversity of Alabama in Huntsville.[5] He moved to Europe in 2009, playing professional hockey for EHC Timmendorfer Strand in the GermanRegionalliga and theGroningen Grizzlies in the DutchEredivisie. His pro hockey career was cut short in 2010 due to injuries.[6]

Acting

In 2013, Russell appeared inLove and Honor andWe Are What We Are.In December 2013, it was announced that he was cast asDuane Allman inRandall Miller'sMidnight Rider, a biopic ofGregg Allman.[7] He also appeared in the 2014 film22 Jump Street.[8] In 2016, he co-starred in a film that premiered at theTribeca Film Festival calledFolk Hero & Funny Guy and starred in "Playtest", an episode of theanthology seriesBlack Mirror.[9] In 2017, he starred inGoon: Last of the Enforcers as Anders Cain, the captain ofminor league hockey team the Halifax Highlanders.

In 2018, he andJovan Adepo played the leads in theWorld War II-sethorror filmOverlord.[10] In 2021, he starred asJohn Walker in theDisney+ seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier.[11] He reprised the role in the 2025 filmThunderbolts* and will appear in the 2026 filmAvengers: Doomsday.[12]

In 2022, Russell took on the role of real-life murdererDan Lafferty in theFX on HuluminiseriesUnder the Banner of Heaven. In July 2022, he joined his father inApple TV+ andLegendary Television'sGodzilla series,Monarch: Legacy of Monsters which is set in the world of Legendary'sMonsterVerse franchise.[13]

Russell starred in the 2024 supernatural filmNight Swim. He is also set to star inSteven Spielberg'suntitled UFO film.

Personal life

In 2012, Russell married stylist Sanne Hamers, whom he met in the Netherlands while playing hockey.[14][15] The couple separated in 2015 and divorced in 2017.[16][17] Russell began a relationship with actressMeredith Hagner in 2015 after meeting her on the set of the filmFolk Hero & Funny Guy.[18] They married in 2019.[19] They have two sons, Buddy and Boone, born in 2021 and 2024.[20][21]

Russell was a goaltender for the2022 NHL All-Star Game's breakaway challenge.[22]

Russell co-foundedLake Hour, a premium sparkling cocktail brand, with film producer Richard Peete in 2023.[23]
