New Japan Pro-Wrestling event series

Wrestling Dontaku (レスリングどんたく,Resuringu Dontaku) is an annualprofessional wrestling event promoted byNew Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). It takes place at the end of Japan'sGolden Week, in the city ofFukuoka alongside theHakata Dontaku festival in early May.

Wrestling Dontaku was originally held from1993 to1995, and again from2000 to2001, inFukuoka at theFukuoka Dome. The event was revived in2009 in the smallerFukuoka Kokusai Center, and aired as apay-per-view (PPV). From2013 to2014, the event also aired outsideJapan as an internet pay-per-view (iPPV). Since2015, the event has aired worldwide on NJPW's internet streaming site,NJPW World. In 2018 and 2019, Wrestling Dontaku took place over two back-to-back shows.[1] The event was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 on May 3 and May 4, but was cancelled due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[2] In 2022, the event took place on May 1 atFukuoka PayPay Dome, formerly known as the Fukuoka Dome. This was the first time that Wrestling Dontaku was held in the domed venue since 2001.

The fourth Wrestling Dontaku, first in five years, was held on May 5, 2000, inFukuoka,Fukuoka, at theFukuoka Dome.

The event featured eight matches, two of which were contested forchampionships.[7] The event opened with the finals of the2000 Young Lion Cup, whereKenzo Suzuki defeatedShinya Makabe,[7] who later became better known as Togi Makabe, winning theIWGP Heavyweight Championship.[36] In the semi-main event,Manabu Nakanishi andYuji Nagata successfully defended theIWGP Tag Team Championship againstKazunari Murakami andNaoya Ogawa, while in the main event,Kensuke Sasaki, using his Power Warriorpersona, defeatedThe Great Muta to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.[7]

The fifth Wrestling Dontaku was held on May 5, 2001, inFukuoka,Fukuoka, at theFukuoka Dome. The event featured nine matches, one of which was contested for achampionship.[8]

In the title match,El Samurai andJyushin Thunder Liger defeated theMexican brother tag team ofDr. Wagner, Jr. andSilver King to retain theIWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship.[8] The event also featured appearances bymixed martial artistsDon Frye and Rainy Martinez.[8]
