TheWorld Classical Tamil Conference 2010 was an international gathering ofscholars,poets,political leaders andcelebrities with an interest inTamil people, theTamil language andTamil literature. It was held inCoimbatore between 23 June and 27 June 2010 with an expenditure of more than 500Crores.

The WCTC was held atCODISSIA Trade Fair Complex in Coimbatore and chaired by then chief minister ofTamil Nadu,M. Karunanidhi and was organized by hisgovernment.[1][2]

The conference was inaugurated by the President of India,Pratibha Patil. Finnish Tamil scholarAsko Parpola was awarded the KalaignarM. Karunanidhi Classical Tamil award. Tamil scholar V. Sivathambi fromSri Lanka,UNESCO Director Arumugam Parasuraman, MP and political leaderSitaram Yechury of Communist Party of India (Marxist),D. Raja ofCommunist Party of India,Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi PresidentThol. Thirumavalavan andPattali Makkal Katchi founderS. Ramadoss participated in the conference.[3][4] Dignitaries and Tamil scholars were gifted with an engravedThanjavur plate.[5]

US Tamil scholarGeorge Hart presented a paper onSangam literature and Indian epigraphistIravatham Mahadevan chaired a debate on scripts. Rononjoy Adhikari and Kavitha Gingal from the Institute of Mathematical Science, who were working on a mathematical model to relate theIndus script with theDravidian language were involved in the debate.[6]

Theme Song

The theme song, "Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiyaam" was written by thenTamil NaduChief MinisterM. Karunanidhi with music byA.R. Rahman. The video was directed byGautham Vasudev Menon featuring artists, musicians, singers.[7]

Controversies

This conference was not approved by the International Association for Tamil Research. Not all agreed with the academic and intellectual rigor of the event.[8][9][10][11]

The conference and associated activities faced opposition and criticisms from various political parties.[12][13][14]
