Wolfgang Ullmann (18 August 1929 – 30 July 2004) was a Germanjournalist,theologian, and politician.

Life

Wolfgang Ullmann was born inBad Gottleuba nearDresden. From 1948 to 1954 he studiedProtestant theology and alsophilosophy, first inBerlin and then at theUniversity of Göttingen.

Following graduation he returned toEast Germany in 1954 and becameminister in Colmnitz,Saxony. In 1963 he was appointedlecturer inChurch History atNaumburg.

From 1978, he was lecturer in Church History at the training centre of the Eastern Region of the then dividedEvangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg inEast Berlin.

Protected by the Protestant Church in East Germany, opposition movements against the regime in theGDR formed and in 1987 Wolfgang Ullman became a member of one of these group, the “Initiative for the Refusal of Practice and Principle of the Demarcation”.

AfterGerman reunification in 1990 he was a member of parliament (Bundestag) and from 1994 to 1998 a member of theEuropean Parliament forAlliance '90/The Greens.[1]

He was married since 1956 and had three children including the composerJakob Ullmann. He died during a holiday in theOre Mountains.
