Winter Island (also known asRuckels Island)[1] is a 453-acre (183 ha) island inSuisun Bay, in the westernSacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.[2][3] It is north ofPittsburg,[2][3] separated fromBrowns Island to the west by aslough. It wasprivate property,[3] and contained one house.[2] It is used as aduck hunting area, awetland, and adredging disposal area.[3] In 2016 Winter Island was purchased by theCalifornia Department of Water Resources in order to restore the island as atidal marsh.[4] Winter Island is part ofContra Costa County, and managed byReclamation District 2122.[5] It is shown, labeled "Ruckels Island", on an 1850 survey map of theSan Francisco Bay area made byCadwalader Ringgold[6] and an 1854 map of the area byHenry Lange.[7]
In 2009, Brusco Tug and Barge, atugboat company, pled guilty to illegal dredge dumping near the island between 2003 and 2007.[3] In 2014, a largewildfire broke out on the island.[2]
