TheWindsorShahnameh orShahnameh of Qarajaghay Khan[1] (Persian:شاهنامه قرچغایخان) is an illustrated manuscript of theShahnameh, thenational epic ofGreater Iran. It is one of the most famous manuscripts of theShahnameh, dating from 1648. The painters areMuhammad Qasim andMuhammad Yusuf.[2] The miniatures of thisShahnameh are very similar to the miniatures of theShahnameh of Rashida, and therefore it has been suggested that these manuscripts have been prepared by the same painters.[3]
The WindsorShahnameh contains 148 or 149 miniatures and is written inNastaʿlīq script byMohammad Hakim Hosseini to the order ofQarachaqay Khan (one of the commanders-in-chief ofAbbas I of Persia). It is in very good condition compared to other manuscripts of theShahnameh. It is not clear how and when this version of theShahnameh was acquired byAhmad Shah Durrani and subsequently his heir,Kamran Shah. In 1839, the WindsorShahnameh was presented toQueen Victoria by Kamran Shah, for her support of the Afghans against theQajar dynasty. The manuscript is now in theRoyal Collection and usually in the library atWindsor Castle.
