Windows App Studio, formerlyWindows Phone App Studio is a discontinuedweb app provided byMicrosoft for Windows app development. It allowed users to createapps that could be installed or published to theMicrosoft Store (Formerly known as theWindows Store[1][2]), and in addition provided the full source code in the form of aVisual Studio 'solution'. The tool was used to developUniversal Windows Platform apps.[3][4]
It allowed newcomers tocomputer programming to createsoftware applications for theWindows andWindows Phoneoperating system (OS).[5] It used agraphical interface, allowing users to create anapplication that could run onWindows Phone andWindows devices with little experience, and concentrated primarily onapps forwebsites andcontent streams.[6] It also allowed users todownload thesource code of theapplications made within the studio for further edits inVisual Studio.[7] Some of its features included aLogo andImageWizard,customizabletheme templates, and the ability to insertembedded content from sites such asYouTube,Flickr andFacebook.[8][9] The service worked only for those with aMicrosoft account and was provided completely free of charge.[10]
On 27 May 2015,Microsoft added support forWindows 10applications and included new features such as live tile updatability,Xbox Music Data Sourcing,Bing Maps, andanalytics forapplications concerning how often anapplication gets opened, crashes, and is used by users who have installed it.[11] In March 2016,Microsoft released theWindows App Studio Installer forWindows 10 andWindows 10 Mobile devices which alloweddevelopers toinstall and testapplications developed in the Windows App Studio, and generate and scanQR codes associated with thedownloadlink of theirapplication.[12][13]
In June 2017,Microsoft announced that they would be shutting down the service on 1 December in the same year.[14] However,Windows Template Studio is available as the successor to the Windows App Studio in the form of aVisual Studio extension to create apps.[15] Thesource code[16] of the succeeding project is provided atGitHub.
