William Roger Revelle (born c. 1944) is apsychology professor atNorthwestern University working inpersonality psychology. Revelle studies the biological basis of personality andmotivation,psychometric theory, the structure of dailymood, and models ofattention andmemory.
Revelle was raised in La Jolla, California.[1] His father,Roger Revelle, was an early theorist inglobal warming.[2]
Revelle graduated from Pomona College in 1965, abandoning a mathematics major in favor of psychology. He spent two years inSarawak, Malaysia, as a volunteer in thePeace Corps before earning his PhD in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1973.[1] He became a member of the Northwestern Faculty in 1973.[citation needed]
Revelle has previously served as the President (2005–2009) of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences (ISSID),[3] the President (2008–2009) of theAssociation for Research in Personality (ARP), and the President (1984) of theSociety of Multivariate Experimental Psychology (SMEP).[4]
Currently, he is vice-chair of the Governing Board of theBulletin of the Atomic Scientists, having previously served as Chair (2009–2012).[5] He also serves as the President (2018–present) of theInternational Society for Intelligence Research (ISIR).[6]
Additionally, he is a Fellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS; 1996–present),[7] theAssociation for Psychological Science (APS; 1994–present),[8] theAmerican Psychological Association (APA Division 5; 2011–present),[9] and theSociety for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP; 2015–present).[10]
He resides in Evanston, Illinois.[1]
