American bishop
William Edward McManus (January 27, 1914 – March 3, 1997) was a 20th-centurybishop of theCatholic Church in the United States. He served as anauxiliary bishop of theArchdiocese of Chicago in Illinois from 1967 to 1976 and bishop of theDiocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend in Indiana from 1976 to 1985.[ 1]
William McManus was born on January 27, 1914, inChicago ,Illinois . He was ordained apriest on April 15, 1939, for the Archdiocese of Chicago by CardinalGeorge Mundelein .[ 2]
Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago [ edit ] On June 11, 1967, McManus was namedtitular bishop ofMesarfelta Pope Paul VI . He was consecrated atHoly Name Cathedral in Chicago on August 24, 1967, by CardinalJohn Cody . BishopsCletus F. O'Donnell andAloysius John Wycislo were the principal co-consecrators.[ 2]
Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend [ edit ] On August 24, 1976, Paul VI named McManus as the seventh bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend.[ 2] Fort Wayne, Indiana , on October 29, 1976.
Pope John Paul II accepted McManus' resignation as bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend on February 18, 1985. He died on March 3, 1997, at age 83 inDes Plaines, Illinois .[ 2]
