William Tomomori Fukuda Sharpe (born 1986[1][2][3]) is an English actor and filmmaker. After writing for comedy shows and appearing in the medical dramaCasualty (2009–2010), he made his feature directorial debut withBlack Pond (2011), for which he receiveda BAFTA nomination. He created, wrote, directed, and starred in theChannel 4 comedy-dramaFlowers (2016–2018) and starred in theBBC Two seriesDefending the Guilty (2018–2019). His appearance inGiri/Haji (2019) earned him aBAFTA for Best Supporting Actor.

Sharpe went on to direct the filmThe Electrical Life of Louis Wain and theSky Atlantic miniseriesLandscapers (both 2021). He received aPrimetime Emmy Award nomination for his appearance in thesecond season ofThe White Lotus (2022).

Early life and education

Sharpe was born in London and raised inTokyo until the age of eight.[4][5] The Sharpe family then moved back to England and settled inSurrey.[6]

His mother is Japanese, while his father is British.[7] He has two younger siblings.[6] His brother is composer Arthur Sharpe, who has written music forThe Darkest Universe,Black Pond, andFlowers.[8]

After returning to England, he studied atWinchester College.[4] Sharpe then studiedClassics at theUniversity of Cambridge, where he was the president of theCambridge Footlights.[9][10]

Career

Sharpe graduated in 2008 and joined theRoyal Shakespeare Company (RSC) for their 2008/2009 season.[11] He spent a year at the RSC, appearing in such plays asThe Taming of the Shrew,The Merchant of Venice, andThe Tragedy ofThomas Hobbes, in which he played a youngIsaac Newton.[12][13] He played the character of Yuki Reid in the BBC medical dramaCasualty.[12]

In 2009, he directed and co-wrote, with his friendTom Kingsley, the short filmCockroach. The pair's first feature-length film,Black Pond, earned them a nomination for theBAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.[4]

Sharpe is known for writing, directing, and starring in the dark comedy-dramaFlowers, which premiered onChannel 4 in 2016.[11] StarringOlivia Colman,Julian Barratt,Daniel Rigby andSophia Di Martino,Flowers is a black comedy that tackles mental health, and follows the four eccentric members of the Flowers family as they navigate their lives and their inner demons. The first series won aBAFTA Television Award for best scripted comedy, and the second series aired in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim.[14]

In 2020, Sharpe won aBAFTA Television Award for his supporting role as Rodney Yamaguchi inBBC dramaGiri/Haji—a roleThe Independent called 'one of the most riotously funny turns since Richard E Grant stepped out asWithnail.'[15][16]

Sharpe directed and co-wrote the 2021biographicalcomedy-drama filmThe Electrical Life of Louis Wain, starringBenedict Cumberbatch as the artistLouis Wain.[17][18]

In 2022, Sharpe joined the cast of theHBO seriesThe White Lotus in itssecond season, set inSicily, as Ethan Spiller, a newly wealthy tech entrepreneur on vacation.[19] This role earned him aPrimetime Emmy Award nomination forOutstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.[20]

In 2023, Sharpe was announced as the director of the film adaptation ofJapanese Breakfast frontwomanMichelle Zauner's memoir,Crying in H Mart.[21] In 2025, Zauner said that Sharpe had stepped down from the project.[22]

In 2024, Sharpe had a supporting role in thecomedy-drama filmA Real Pain, alongsideJesse Eisenberg andKieran Culkin. The same year, he began hosting theparanormal podcastExtrasensory.[23]

In 2025, he was cast in a lead role in the romantic comedy seriesToo Much as well as the upcoming British seriesAmadeus andProdigies.

Personal life

Sharpe hastype two bipolar disorder.[24][25]

Sharpe is married to actressSophia Di Martino,[26][27] with whom he has been in a relationship since 2009.[2] They have two children, born in 2019 and 2021.[28][29]
