William John Bulsiewicz better known asDr. B., is an American board-certifiedgastroenterologist, author, and advocate for the exploration of the relationship betweenthe gut microbiome, dietary fiber, andplant-based nutrition.[1] He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at theEmory University School of Medicine.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Bulsiewicz was raised in "a Jesuit-educated family."[3] He studied chemistry atVanderbilt University and graduated in 2002.[4][5][6]

Although originally planning to study pediatrics, Bulsiewicz decided in 2005 to switch fields,[7] and graduated fromGeorgetown University School of Medicine in 2006 with a specialization in gastroenterology.[3][5] In addition, he received a master's degree in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) fromNorthwestern University[6][5] in 2010;[8][5] and a certificate inplant-based nutrition fromeCornell.[9]

Career

[edit]

From 2006 to 2009, Bulsiewicz completed his internship and residency atMcGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. He then served as chief medical resident in internal medicine from 2009-2010.[5] Next, from 2010 to 2014, he was a Gastroenterology Fellow atUNC Medical Center,[5] where he also served as chief gastroenterology fellow.[2] In addition, during this time he received a grant from theNational Institutes of Health for a one year epidemiology fellowship at theUNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.[2]

He is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine,[5] and worked for many years as agastroenterologist inSouth Carolina medical centers.[5] He is currently the U.S. Medical Director for Zoe.[10]

Dietary fiber and gut health

[edit]

Bulsiewicz's research and advocacy centers on the relationship betweendietary fiber, the gut microbiome, andplant-based nutrition. He argues that the populations in theBlue Zones consume predominantly fiber-rich plant-based diets,[11][12] stating, "if you look at the healthiest populations on the planet in modern times, they’re in the five blue zones, and all five blue zones are 90 percent plant based. So, they are not necessarily vegan, but they are plant-predominant in a way where the meat is not the centerpiece. The plant is the centerpiece. The meat is the side show."[13]

He also advocates for the consumption of plant-basedfermented foods for better health.[14]

Publications

[edit]

Personal life

[edit]

Bulsiewicz grew up eating theStandard American Diet, which led to poor health during his medical studies (as nutrition was not part of his medical training).[19] He only turned to aplant-based diet around 2012-2013[7] (during his time as a Fellow atUNC Chapel Hill) when he met, and was influenced by, Valerie who was already plant-based.[20][19] They married in 2013,[21] and live with their children inCharleston, South Carolina.[19]
