Puntland?

[edit]

Since thisConstitutional crisis in Somalia has begun,Puntland is now considered a de facto state. Does this wikiproject cover Puntland now?𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵)11:59, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Puntland is not a de facto state. In the sense that it operates outside of central government control, that has been the case for much of the past few decades. In the sense that it thinks of itself as an independent state, it does not, it still considers itself part of Somalia.CMD (talk)13:35, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well in that case, thePuntland article needs to be fixed𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵)13:43, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Quite a few related articles probably do. Note that none of the three sources attached to the first sentence actually call it a de facto state. "shall exercise powers of an independent state" is carefully worded by the state government, and our articles should be similarly careful.CMD (talk)16:58, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
ah, ill look into this tomorrow. Thanks for letting me know𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵)20:52, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Artsakhde jure not dissolved

[edit]

It's still a government-in-exile. Would it make sense to keep it because of that? Or are governments-in-exile not allowed there? Am I missing something?wikipedia-kxeon  mailbox20:32, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't seem different from any other government in exile. For what it's worth, the project should cover historical entities (at least post-WWII), but I don't see the presence or absence of a government in exile as affecting that.CMD (talk)02:01, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Military occupation in infoboxes

[edit]

I am bringing this question here asWP:RFCBEFORE suggests using a relevant WikiProject first. I wanted to ask:

Should infoboxes for states with limited recognition indicate theiroccupying power under their status? (Seeexample 1,example 2.)

Occupied territory is a distinct status under international law and infoboxes serve to provide key facts. I do not believe this is aWP:NPOV issues when the reality of occupation is well sourced (in their respective articles and covered elsewhere), and isn't shied away from in similar articles for Palestine, the Golan Heights, and Russian-occupied Ukraine. Listing the occupying power would help readers understand which state hasadditional obligations for the territory. Additionally, excluding information that is backed up by reliable, authoritative sources due to a conflicting opinion of lesser weight might be aWP:UNDUE violation.

Additionally, there is an overalllack of uniformity between infoboxes on similar states which should be addressed too (e.g. the Northern Cyprus article uses "polity" rather than "state" for some reason). I propose the formula "State with limited recognition under [occupying power]military occupation, claimed by [state with de jure claim over territory]", possibly with the addition of a note indicating how many states have extended recognition.Nice4What (talk ·contribs) –(Thanks)17:42, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Islamic Emirate of Somalia

[edit]

Why does this wikiproject not cover this page? just wondering.JaxsonR (talk)23:25, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiUser:JaxsonR, longstanding consensus is thatquasi-states andrebel groups that may control some territory but are typically not regarded as state entities by reliable sources and/or rebel forces that emerged in ongoing civil wars where the territorial situation may change too rapidly should not be listed atList of states with limited recognition. As such, Al-Shabaab / the Islamic Emirate of Somalia would not be considered a state. We did not listISIS as a state with limited recognition for the same reasons.
The name "Islamic Emirate of Somalia" also suggests that they would be ineligible for similar reasons to why the Taliban / Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was ultimately never listed as an unrecognized or partially recognized country, as each country in the world still recognizes an "Afghanistan" and the recognition dispute is over which government is regarded as the legitimate one, which is different from a state-like entity emerging and claiming to be a separate country.
