I noticed that there are various ways of defining historical periods. General history seems to use those periods ofTemplate:History of Japan, art history hasHakuhō period (and possibly other dates and some other periods), in history of swords, there are jokoto, koto, shinkoto, shinshinkoto, gendaito, etc. Would it be feasible and interesting to collect these various definitions in an articleJapanese historical periods? Thanks for the link (which makes it more complicated than I thought). Initially I just thought about discussing the main periods ("Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku"-column) and other periodizations as used in other fields such as in arts or sword appreciation. It seems that we also need to include geographic differences. Basically, what I would like the article to look like is: sections with headings ("General History", "Arts and Architecture/Culture", "Swords",... are there more?); each section should contain the names of various periods, their start and end date and which event defines these dates (for instance: move of capital defines the Nara period->Heian period transition, etc.). Not sure how to arrange this information: in table format or as prose together with atimeline.bamse (talk)10:30, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Bamse. I found several sources:

• 番鍛冶: Turnus-Schmiede[1] I 'm sure you can read German.
• 隠岐番鍛冶: the rotation smiths of Oki[2]
• Ban-kaji: smiths who worked in rotation[3]

In this caseban means "(monthly) rotation".go is honorific as you already know.

FYI, the new articleTokai earthquakes was prodded for deletion with the reasoning that the redirectTokai Earthquake went to another article. Writing about the Ayanokoji school (Yamashiro Province) of swordmanship forList of National Treasures of Japan (crafts-swords) and was wondering what Ayanokoji refers to. I know that it is a place name in Kyoto where the smith Sadatoshi lived. But is it a street, a temple, a district or something else? Any Kyoto experts around?bamse (talk)21:36, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

It is the street ofHeian-kyō. You can find the name(綾小路) in theHeian-kyō#Schematic diagram of Heian-kyō along with Sanjō-Ōji (三条大路) and Shijō-Ōji (四条大路). The word "kōji" (小路) means "alley". "Ayanokōji"" means "Aya alley". While the word "Ōji" (大路) means more broader "street". ――Phoenix7777 (talk)22:49, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

What or who is Kiku-ichimonji? The articleKiku-ichimonji says that these are the swords made by the swordsmiths who were in attandance at Emperor Go-Toba. On the other hand,this book on page 99 says that it is just another name for the smith Norimune. Who is correct? Kiku-ichimonji = swords or Norimune?bamse (talk)22:23, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

I am suspicious of a few lines in the opening 'production' section of the movie "The Cove" which have been added out of style with the rest of the article. There are some spurious claims which are supported by one reference which is in Japanese so I cannot read it. Please would someone be kind enough to translate?:

The offending paragraph:

"The film crews used insulting English words and gestures that locals were able to understand, threw pebbles at locals, put a handy video coder directly on locals face, told locals that Japanese penises were the smallest in the world. When the locals became angry, the film crews fell down and started to cry in pain"

Unless someone has a copy of the magazine, we don't have any way to check up on the reference. It's in an article whose title translates as something like "Ecoterrorist's sneaky tactics unsettled anger filmThe Cove screening panic: Scores a direct hit at Wakayama Prefecture's Taiji Town dolphin and whale fishermen".
