2026 local elections in Japan

[edit]

I don't know much about how election works in Japan so, I was looking for info to put in the background section of this article. I want to know why does these elections are held outside the unified local elections and why different dates.

Also, i don't know if I format this correctly. ThanksWarm Regards,Miminity (Talk?) (me contribs)04:27, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The lead ofElections in Japan sort of explains it:

The Japanese political process has two types of elections.
- National elections (国政選挙,kokusei senkyo)
- Subnational/local elections (地方選挙,chihō senkyo)

While the national level features a parliamentary system of government where the head of government is elected indirectly by the legislature, prefectures and municipalities employ a presidential system where chief executives and legislative assemblies are directly elected, independently from each other. Many of the prefectural and municipal elections are held together in unified local elections (統一地方選挙,Tōitsu chihō senkyo) since 1947, held in years before leap years;but since each election cycle of every chief executive or assembly of any prefecture or municipality is independent and not reset after resignations/deaths/recalls/no-confidence votes/dissolutions/municipal mergers, there are also many non-unified local elections today. Prefectural and municipal assemblies are unicameral, the National Diet is bicameral, with the two houses on independent election cycles.

Essentially these are by-elections caused by resignations, deaths, etc. Unlike some other countries or states, election cycles are not reset at prefectural or local levels of Japan. So elections are called somewhat swiftly if an elected leader can no longer serve. This is my understanding at least, as someone who is also not an expert in Japanese elections, but has been editing a lot in this topic area lately.Okashikunaitalk11:36, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I guess this will do.Warm Regards,Miminity (Talk?) (me contribs)11:19, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Okashikunai essentially called it, only to clarify "by-election". The key thing is: For governors and mayors, there are basically no by-elections. The closest equivalent to a by-election where the elected only serves a partial term is probably thedenaoshi election case [a chief exec 1. resigns unforced by recall or vote of no confidence, 2. stands in the resulting election and 3. wins]; and it's rare, Kawamura in Nagoya 2011 probably being the most notable recent example. Practically any other resignation/vacancy/municipal merger/whatever leads to a new regular election for a full term, and thus a completely new election cycle. Cycle "resets" to the unified cycle can happen, but that is mostly random, the limits in the electoral law (after event x, new election must be held within y days) apply. So, a huge chunk of pref. & munic. chief exec elections have left the "unified" cycle of 1947 by now. Roughly half of munic. assembly elecions are are also non-unified by now, but most of those are presumably the result of municipal mergers (1947: ~10k municipalities, today: <1750) as assembly dissolutions/self-dissolutions/recalls are rarer than chief exec resignations/deaths/etc. --Asakura Akira (talk)05:51, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

UpdatingYoshida dormitory, Kyoto University

[edit]

Hi all

I recently saw thatYoshida dormitory, Kyoto University is planned to be demolished and the students are protesting again, but I can't seem to find any sources about it. Possibly there are some in Japanese? The Japanese article is very extensive. I did find this reliable source which wasn't included that might have some new info:

If anyone can help improve the article I would appreciate it :)

Thanks

Potential full rewrite of Hachiman

[edit]

Hello all! :) Recently I've tried to do some copyediting on the article forHachiman, however I believe the article may need a full rewrite to fully comply with grammar, style and formatting guides. I don't have enough knowledge of the subject to confidently do it myself, so I thought if I posted about it here, someone who is capable of giving the article the attention it needs could be made aware of it. Many thanks!🀰☯🀰Hexes54Talk to me🀰☯🀰09:05, 29 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of articles in the Shinto field that were very, very poorly made or very poor edits were made to a couple of years ago but there seems to be very few people working on them. I am slowly working my way through my list of them, but the list is very long and each time I do one article I add about three more.
Hachiman looks, at least at first glance, not quite as bad as some of them, but he is more important so I'll see if I can take a look if I can find some time. And there seem to be more editors working in Buddhism, so hopefully someone else will get to it faster than me.
PS: I would love to resurrect the Shinto task force if anyone wants to coordinate with me!Erynamrod (talk)10:55, 29 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm more versed in Japanese Buddhism than Shinto but I'd be happy to help where possible! :)🀰☯🀰Hexes54Talk to me🀰☯🀰11:02, 29 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be in touch then! There is some overlap considering how much Shinto and Buddhism merged, so definitely good to have Buddhism knowledge too. And also just a second set of eyes...Erynamrod (talk)12:50, 29 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Input on kami/emperor genealogies

[edit]

There are a few articles/templates of kami and/or emperor genealogies that I have concerns with and I'd like opinions.

With the imperial genealogies we have the problem that they blur the lines between myth and reality as they state the emperors are descended from kami, and do not make it clear within the template/page that this is myth (other than one of them noting some of the emperors may be legendary, but no mention about the kami). The Imperial Household Agency doesn't even include kami in the genealogy, though they do include emperors whose existence is contested.[1]

The other issue with making a genealogy of kami is that there are multiple primary sources with conflicting information which you'd need to make decisions about what to use and not use. This is particularly problematic seeing as clans regularly attempted to claim certain genealogies for political reasons, meaning there isn't really a non-political genealogy. It isn't uncommon for Shinto academics to synthesise the information from the multiple sources, but I don't believe it should be done by a Wikipedia editor as it has been here.

I feel like something needs to be done, but I'm not positive on the right direction.

Family tree of Japanese monarchs
Template:Generations of Jimmu
Template:Eight generations of Izumo
Template:Three generations of Hyuga

(my last complaint is entirely person preference, but they're just ugly on the pages they're used on because they break the formatting)Erynamrod (talk)20:51, 6 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there was a discussion where I pointed out the mixing of in-universe and historical perspectives in more detail, but I can't find it at the moment. There is other discussion of related issues at, e.g.,Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1122#Need Japanese-speaking and maybe admin help. Other related discussion atWikipedia:Articles for deletion/Oto-takara. These are mainly the work of one well meaning but currently indefinitely blocked editor, and I agree that work is needed.Dekimasuよ!04:37, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
TheFamily tree of Japanese monarchs was originally just the monarchs from Jimmu, so we could theoretically pull out the kami and at least start with Jimmu keeping the note about the existence of some of those emperors being contested. At least then it'd be the "official" genealogy, which is verifiable.
The most effective way I can think of for solving the myth/history problem in the templates is turning them into pages where we can put in the context. This requires them to be notable enough to justify having their own page though, and I'm not sure they are (and it doesn't solve the "who gets to decide what genealogical information to use" problem). The Three generations of Hyuga (Himuka) is a defined concept that exists[2], though it's quite niche even in Japanese, so that one might qualify, but I'm not sure about the other two.
I might actually prefer howŌyamatsumi handles the genealogy (minus the templates which were added later) because the article simply lists it out, illustrating the fact that there are multiple possible relations depending on what source you're looking at.
Which makes me lean towards deleting the templates that can't be turned into a page, because they are misleading and may not even add any value because the correct information can be provided in a different, if less immediately readable, format.Erynamrod (talk)11:03, 7 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Translation help needed for bilingual welcome template

[edit]

 Courtesy link: Template:Welcome-foreign/Japanese

Hello. Can you help verify a brief, English-to-Japanese translation in a welcome template?

Template:Welcome-foreign is a bilingual welcome template used to welcome new users who have written content in some other language besides English. The template welcomes them first in English, then in their own language, as long as it is one of the three dozen languages it can handle. New languages areeasily added. I have added support for Japanese, but I don't know Japanese so I used (old, pre-AI) automatic translation to createTemplate:Welcome-foreign/Japanese from the original atTemplate:Welcome-foreign/English. I'd appreciate it if a native Japanese speaker could verify or improve the translation. Feel free to edit it directly, or paste a better translation below, if you prefer not to edit a template. Thanks!Mathglot (talk)06:32, 9 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
