Automatically subscribe to topics that I create

[edit]

Is it possible to automatically subscribe to any talk page topic I create, without having to click on [subscribe]?AmethystZhou (talk)07:41, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AmethystZhou Yes, you can enable this option inPreferences → Editing → Discussion pages → Automatically subscribe to topics.Matma Rextalk09:59, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately that's coupled with automatically subscribing to topics you comment on. I want to subscribe to every topic I start, but only a few of those I comment on.Awkward42 (talk)[the alternate account ofThryduulf (talk)] 11:02, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Awkward42 (talk)[the alternate account ofThryduulf (talk)]11:02, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Automatically subscribing to replies

[edit]

I'm relieved to find it's possible to subscribe in order to receive replies on Talk pages, but...

  • I'm surprised this isn't the default
  • There's an 'Add this page to your watchlist' tickbox when adding a reply, but no 'get notified of replies'
  • The settting to turn this on automatically is found under 'Editing' settings, rather than 'Notifications' - I was expecting to find it under 'Notify me about these events' if it was possible at all, and it was only because I asked for help on the Wikipedia Discordand then clicked through to this Talk page that I was able to find it at all!

Oolong (talk)10:20, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your first point, it is enabled by default for new users (registered on or after 2023-08-18)[1]T294398. When developing the feature, we were concerned that senior users would be unhappy to receive possibly hundreds of notifications per day.Matma Rextalk14:17, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's great that it it's turned on by default for new users! Thanks for that.
Can you see where I'm coming from by saying that it should be a Notification setting, not an Editing one?Oolong (talk)14:43, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I see what you mean.Matma Rextalk18:43, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there still a 5000 limit?Doug Wellertalk14:47, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming you mean the limit on the number of your subscriptions – no, it was removed here:T294881.Matma Rextalk18:44, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Useful and Undocumented (?) feature of reply tool / add topic tool when in visual mode

[edit]

It seems that it is perfectly possible to add templates using the standard visualmode interface in the reply tool by typing two opening braces ( {{ ), which brings up the template window. It's unclear to me why this is only possible via this keyboard shortcut at present, and not (as far as I can see unless I'm missing it) from the interface itself, nevertheless, it is still a useful feature, so perhaps it should be included in this help page (and/or onHelp:Talk pages § Reply tool)Tomatoswoop (talk)19:04, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is a bit of a secret feature indeed. Note that it only works in the "Add topic" tool, and not in the "Reply" tool (because many templates don't work when indented with: in wikitext).Matma Rextalk20:26, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How to revise old user talk page editnotice to be compatible with REPLYTOOL?

[edit]

I'm using{{REVISIONUSER}}. Is there a substitute that works with REPLYTOOL? -Hipal (talk)17:48, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can you say more about what you're using it for, and in what manner is it not compatible with the reply tool?Matma Rextalk11:59, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was notified about it in this discussion:User_talk:Hipal#Regarding_Template:Ref_expand.
Try to edit my talk page and see what you get. --Hipal (talk)19:17, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I see "Welcome, , to the Wikipedia user discussion page for Hipal." (testing here:[2]), so I guess that's the problem. However, I see the exact same text with discussion tools disabled (testing here:[3]), so the problem probably lies somewhere else. Has this magic word ever worked to show the username of the person viewing the page?mw:Help:Magic words doesn't mention that.Matma Rextalk20:57, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I was wondering. I put that editnotice together a very long time ago, copying from who-knows-what. I'll poke around, but any suggestions would be welcome. --Hipal (talk)22:13, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
