Question

[edit]

are self-requested blocks allowed on temporary accounts?~2025-30768-60 (talk)10:10, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Given that such accounts are temporary, I'm not sure what the purpose would be for doing so.331dot (talk)10:30, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary account blocks section

[edit]

Hi everyone! I just added a new subsection to the"Implementing blocks" section of this Wikipedia page. In a nutshell, it summarizes and explains the new changes regarding temporary accounts and how they work, and includes a table that summarizes how each block type affects temporary accounts and permanent accounts. I wanted to start a talk page discussion and let everyone know, as well as get any kind of input or feedback about it. If anyone has questions, objections, concerns, etc., please don't hesitate to respond below and let me know (please ping me in your response so that I'm notified), and I'll be happy to discuss them. :-) Best -~Oshwah~(talk)(contribs)00:54, 5 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Oshwah, I'd like to discuss further, as I looked at a TA account recently that probably needed a block and I had no idea what to do. IIRC, it was an edit war over poorly sourced content. I think I just semi'd the page for 24 hours and told myself to go figure this out.
Also, this is probably a stupid question, but I assume by 'permanent account' we mean registered user?Valereee (talk)15:26, 6 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and thanks for adding this!Valereee (talk)15:32, 6 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If "registered user" is meant (and that is the logical thing for "permanent account" to mean) it should be added toWikipedia:Glossary (WP:G), which I notice is also lacking an entry for "temporary account".WP:G#IP user also needs an update.Thryduulf (talk)02:07, 7 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee - No problem! I try to add new sections and help explain things in-depth in order to help spread the knowledge. :-) You are correct! The terms "permanent account", "named account", "registered account", etc will generally refer to registered Wikipedia accounts that aren'ttemporary accounts. If you happen to run into any Wikipedia pages that only use the term "account", they're likely referring to permanent accounts (sincetemporary accounts were just recently deployed), but can also refer to accounts of any kind (registered or temporary). It just depends on when the page was last updated. ;-) Please let me know if I can answer any more questions or help you with anything in-depth in regards to temporary accounts, and I'll be more than happy to lend a hand. :-)~Oshwah~(talk)(contribs)21:52, 7 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, @Oshwah! The main thing I was looking for is how to use which kind of block. I always want to use the least restrictive I can, but with temporary account I've been kind of wondering if that is different from IPs? That is, should I avoid blocking TAs for more than I'd have blocked an IP? And when should I hard block, etc.?Valereee (talk)22:14, 7 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee - Sure, I'll be happy to explain! You'll generally apply blocks totemporary accounts like you would if it was aregistered account that was causing the same shenanigans that led to the block that you're about to apply. Theprevent account creation option works like it did before; it prevents the blocked temporary account from creating newregistered accounts during the time of their block. Selecting theautoblock option will apply this block to the IP address that the temporary account last used, as well as any other IP addresses that the temporary account tries to edit from, and any temporary accounts that attempt to edit from the autoblocked IP address - for 24 hours. There are two additional tables that you can reviewhere that will outline what each block option does when blocking an account or blocking an IP address or range. If you have any questions about them, definitely let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. :-)~Oshwah~(talk)(contribs)22:42, 7 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oshwah, thanks! That was more or less what I was unclear on: whether a temp acct is more like an IP or more like an account when it came to blocking policy. So with a TA, there's less risk of collateral damage, except that an autoblock is going to affect others in that IP? But since autoblock is only for 24 hours, not that big a deal?Valereee (talk)13:38, 8 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

AddingWikipedia:Spam-only account toWikipedia:Blocking policy#Disruption-only

[edit]

Forgive me as I am not very familiar with the "policy proposals" side of Wikipedia, but I have createdWikipedia:Spam-only account a while ago and was thinking that a link to this page atWikipedia:Blocking policy#Disruption-only might be helpful.
