Gukesh is only 18 years old, a remarkable age for a grandmaster. That was once the case, but the average age that someone earns the title of Grandmaster has fallen substantially in recent years; itsits just under 21 now. And, looking at theGM applications for the 2025 first FIDE council, 4 of the 8 GM applicants are presently under 18.
