Some Russian- and Polish-language folklore reference works

I am looking into a possible article for an obscure folkloric critter (sandboxhere) and have gotten as far as finding four sources courtesy of the Russian and Polish Wikipedias. I only need screenshots of the relevant entry from each book; I can use DeepL to translate afterwards (though if a native speaker of either language does it here instead, I would be very grateful).

Notice: starting 6 February and for (hopefully only) two weeks, I will be in a location without regular internet access and working long hours, so replies during that time may be delayed. Thanks,SilverTiger12 (talk)00:23, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SilverTiger12:, you could try and get in touch withSławobóg. He's the one that is translating Russian and Slavic folklore articles into English with reliable sources.KHR FolkMyth (talk)10:03, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also,@SilverTiger12:,here's a French language article that mentions the korgorushi as a domestic creature like the domovoi. Could be a starting point.KHR FolkMyth (talk)10:08, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ebook from university library

[edit]

This book is available electronically from many university libraries but not commercially. Could someone with academic access get the following chapters for me: "Ethnic Germans in the early USSR", "The deportation", and "Conclusion".

Please don't bother to scan it.

ForSoviet Germans, possibly other articles

Thanks, (t ·c)buidhe05:13, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

As that's 2 pretty substantive chapters (~1/4 of the book's length) (conclusion is only 2 pp), I wouldn't feel comfortable sending both, as UK copyright law is pretty clear about a 1 chapter / 5% limit. But if there is one you want more than the other, I could send it.Eddie891TalkWork07:30, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

University of Michigan thesis

[edit]

ForDraft:Dale A. Zimmerman, a draft I am writing. I believe this is his doctoral thesis, and I am hoping I can use it to find more information about his work. A PDF of the thesis can be downloaded for University of Michigan users from the DOI or Handle. Thanks,BhamBoi (talk)05:59, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If it is not possible to share the entire thesis, I was hoping the front matter or indices can provide some biographical information on Zimmerman and/or a name for who his advisor was.BhamBoi (talk)06:01, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sixth edition ofChinese History: A New Manual

  • Wilkinson, Endymion (2022).Chinese History, Volume 1: A New Manual, Enlarged Sixth Edition (Fiftieth Anniversary Edition) (6th ed.). Harvard University Asia Center.ISBN 9780674260184.

ForMOS:JG. I am researching whether Wikipedia should allowChinese calendar dates and, if not, how they should best be converted into Julian/Gregorian dates. My notes are atUser:Toadspike/Lunisolar research. I specifically would like any excerpts from this book about the Calendar – in the 4th edition, which I have access to, Chapter 39 (pp. 492–532) is about the Chinese calendar; this is likely similar in the 6th edition. Most important to me are the sections aboutChronologies & Calendrical Concordances (Chapter 39.13 in the 4th edition) and the sectionCalendrical Difficulties (Chapter 39.5 in the 4th edition); these two sections should total about three pages. Also interesting would be to read SS.8 Calendar Dates, page xix in the fourth edition, which discusses this book's own practices on date formats.

Thanks,Toadspike[Talk]16:30, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Polygnotus: I looked on Factiva and Newspapers.com, and they both have coverage of that day, but he does not seem to be mentioned. He is discussed in a February 16, 2007, article criticizing theStern Review. Could that be it?Averageuntitleduser (talk)00:46, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Averageuntitleduser Yes, it is very possible that the date given is incorrect because of the overall sloppiness with sourcing.Polygnotus (talk)00:48, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
After looking at the article, yeah, that's probably the case. Here is a clipping of the February 16 story.Averageuntitleduser (talk)01:01, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am also interested inthis NewScientist article which is used for the claim thatTol characterises his position as arguing that the economic costs of climate policy should be kept in proportion to its benefits..Polygnotus (talk)00:50, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For finding archives, archive.org and archive.today have the most coverage of popular webpages. I've also tried Ghost Archive and Megalodon, but I find that archive.today is especially good at getting past paywalls.Averageuntitleduser (talk)04:37, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Barker, "Wide-eyes on a painted ocean"

[edit]
  • Paul Barker, "Wide-eyes on a painted ocean",The Guardian, republished inSydney Morning Herald, 10 July 1999, Spectrum, p. 13s

Apparently the article was first inThe Guardian, then later inSydney Morning Herald .. not sure. Do not know if date 10 July 1999 refers to former or latter newspaper.

Thanks,Noleander (talk)18:52, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I searched my university's archives of both papers and did not find this article. I searched for simply the "painted ocean" string, and alternatively articles by Paul Barker, limited to 1999-2000, and didn't find anything in archives for eitherThe Guardian orSydney Morning HeraldEddie891TalkWork09:51, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
BUT: I've now found the article that I think you're looking for:
  • Barker, Paul (13 June 1999). "Wide-eyed on a painted ocean". The Arts.The Sunday Telegraph. p. 9.ProQuest 309328232.
I don't think I can access the full text of this for some reason, but am sure someone else here will be able to.

Rich Apparel - single page request

{{resolved}}

To verify what it says aboutscogger. Not sure what page I need, search isn't too helpful - possibly 256? Thanks, ♠PMC(talk)21:47, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Premeditated Chaos: But it looks like this are only footnotes. –Doc TaxonTalk08:49, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The only mention of scogger is in a footnote, as Doc Taxon mentioned:10 Rutt, R. (1987), A History of Hand Knitting, London: Batsford, pp. 63–5, where he described the sleeve as a ‘scogger’, and the text surrounding this footnote is:There is also a small selection of knitted items including caps, bonnets and a wornout knitted stocking being worn as a sleeve by one of the sailors.10 This style of clothing would have conformed with the acts of apparel and it reflects the types of clothing listed in the small group of wills.ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me!15:35, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's great, thank you both. Mostly wanted to verify that it's that trivial. ♠PMC(talk)22:39, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
