Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country inSoutheast Asia. It's official languages areTetum andPortuguese. Timor-Leste was colonized byPortugal in the 16th century, and was known asPortuguese Timor until Portugal's decolonization of the country. In late 1975 Timor-Leste declared its independence but was invaded andoccupied by Indonesia later that year, and declared that country's 27th province the following year. In 1999, following theUnited Nations-sponsored act of self-determination, Indonesia relinquished control of the territory and Timor-Leste became the first newsovereign state of the twenty-first century onMay 20,2002.more..
