This Wikipedia page has beensuperseded byWikipedia:Romanization of Ukrainian and isretained primarily for historical reference.

The following system of transliteration of Ukrainian from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet is being proposed as a part to the proposedWikipedia:Naming conventions (Cyrillic). Current practice is documented atWikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Cyrillic)#Ukrainian. Please discuss at thetalk page.

Conventional name

[edit]

An object that has a conventional name in English should be named that way, instead of transliterating.

  • For example:Chorne moreBlack Sea,UkrainaUkraine.

National transliteration system

[edit]

The following table describes a method to derive the most common informaltranscriptions of Ukrainian names into theLatin alphabet, suitable for English-speakers.

The table matches the simplified National transliteration system.([1],[2])

The system corresponds toBGN/PCGN romanization system of Ukrainian, with the following exceptions:

  • г in the combinationзг transliterates intogh;
  • є,ю,я transliterate intoie,iu,ia, except at the beginning of words;
  • ї,й both transliterate intoi, except at the beginning of words;
  • щ transliterates intosch;
  • ь and apostrophe are omitted, except inьо andьї.
