Nancy is my web alias and it is what I use in my wiki sig which has already caused confusion with other editors not immediately linking my sig with my mainspace edits. I have had a rename done before as I initially, foolishly, registered with my 'real' name, but at the time of the change I thought that as Nancy was already taken I was unable to change to it. Obviously I have now found out about usurping. I guess what I am trying to say is that I not some fickle timewaster and if you do approve my change to Nancy that is what I shall remain for the rest of my wiki-life. Thanks in advance. •nancytalk to me14:46, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am rather uncomfortable editing under my real name. As a consequence I have been editing anonymously for the past few months, but I would like to get involved in a couple wikiprojects and therefore need to start working under an account again.Stephen Kenny15:40, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Comment you do realize that your real name will still be seen, correct?as you can see here, my old user page (and thus user name) still redirects to my page; not to mention there are any number of other signs you've edited under your real name. If you really want privacy, I recommend you start a new account --Longing....07:22, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I initially tried to register underBungle when I first registered to Wikipedia back in April 2006. I realised it had been taken to my dissappointment, but none the less settled with my current one, Bungle44, albeit reluctantly. I've always used theBungle identity, and it's a nickname which I am most acquainted to, as it is the name which people I know identify me by. Given the existing "Bungle" account has obviously been registered for some time (before I registered), and that is hasn't been used nor does it have any log entries, it seems to make sense that I have the opportunity to take it on as my account name.

Clerk note: The ArbCom, in its /Proposed decision subpage ofWikipedia:Requests for arbitration/COFS is probably going to require COFS to change his username. Thus, the trend that people under ArbCom not being able to change their name can be suspended. However, it does say that this should take place after he returns from the proposed one-month ban. Also, this may want to wait until the decision is final.Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/COFS/Proposed_decision#COFS_must_select_a_new_username is the link.i said05:09, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am not really familiar with this but I thought the decision is clearly unanimous. So this is happening anyway. Can I execute this part of the ArbCom decision now or not?COFS05:02, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My interpretation of theChanging usernames guidelines is that approval should be sought from the ArbCom in this matter; since the case hasn't been closed yet, the formal motion to close being passed would, I assume, be "approval", albeit indirect. Perhaps wait until then? ~Anthøny08:44, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: Looking at the case we seem to be a long way from it closing, never mind the end of the proposed 30 day ban. The case needs 7/13 votes to go ahead and it currently has 5/5. I expect that we will not see it close until until the end of August because of holidays etc, and then COFS will therefore (probably) be banned for a month. It therefore looks likely they will notneed to be renamed before the beginning of October. I will ask arbcomm for clarification but I suspect the anwer will be to wait to avoid confusion.Secretlondon19:07, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not a good sign that you try to preempt the Arbcom's decision here (What do we need them for then?) And I thought my "ban" runs already. Well, back to editing then for me.COFS18:59, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note:

I set this account up myself, but can't get into it. This appears to be the only way to reset a password on Wikipedia! Of course, I want my existing account kept as is (and don't want edits reassigned). Sorry to be a pain! Many thanks,Verisimilus T08:13, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So let me clarify: you created the Taxobot account, but cannot get into it? Do you want the Verisimilus account renamed to the Taxobot account?i said09:11, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's right. The taxobot account is a Bot account, so I want to retain "Verisimilus" for my human editing activities. If the moving of an account is necessary, I've created the account Taxobot1 which could be moved to replace Taxobot. Thanks,Verisimilus T10:19, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I understand now. I think that moving taxobot1 to taxobot would be easiest and simplest, but I am not a 'crat, so I could very well be wrong :) --Anonymous DissidentTalk10:29, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. Well it would have been useful if you'd either (1) created Taxobot while logged in as Verisimilus or (2) made an edit with Taxobot that confirmed the account was owned by you or (3) enabled email on Taxobot so I could email it and find out who owns it. Technically Taxobot is too new an account to be usurped and you cannot prove the account is yours. This request therefore falls rather squarely to the bureaucrats' discretion...WjBscribe16:19, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming the account doesn't reset the password does it? So what is being gained here. Unless you plan to recreate the Taxobot account once it has been renamed to Taxobot1?i said19:41, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The usurpation would rename the unusableUser:Taxobot account toUser:Taxobot (Usurped), and then rename the usableUser:Taxobot1 toUser:Taxobot. So, he would end up with an account that he can access at the correct username. However, I'm inclined to decline this. Since you can't prove that you actually own the account, I suggest that you either stick withTaxobot1 (talk ·contribs) or think up another username. --Deskana(apples)19:46, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you've understood me correctly, Deskana. I accept that I should have (1) remembered the password; (2) provided an e-mail address, and apologise that I've failed on both counts. I thought I had created the bot whilst logged in as me.
As for proof... Isn't the approved bot request, made by me, atWP:BRFA, at the same time as I created the user, proof enough? Or the fact that it has on its talk page a template saying that I'm the owner, which I placed on it immediately after opening the account? Or the fact that ordinary users are not allowed to create user pages including the word "bot"? I've spent a long time trying to get this bot working, and feel a bit miffed that at this rate I'm going to have to spend just as long reclaiming the account, when I could be doing something useful to the 'pedia.
Thanks,
Verisimilus T20:25, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Taxobot was indeed created 7 minutes after the account - that does seem persuasive evidence supporting that Taxobot is Verisimilus' Bot.WjBscribe20:36, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It would be a lot easier to createUser:TaxoBot and redirectUser:Taxobot as adoppelganger...BigNate37(T)21:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bureaucrat note: I'm happy that there is enough circumstantial evidence that Taxobot is Versimilus' bot. I think this counts as a self-usurption then, as we are not expecting Versimilus to object to his own usurption.Secretlondon01:25, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So it's not a real user, just a redirect page?00:06, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is a real user. They created the accountUser:Jonathan and never edited with it - which is why you are allowed to usurp it. Separately from that,User:Jonathan W chose to redirect that account's userpage to his userpage. The list of users is based on account creation, not whether a userpage has been created.WjBscribe00:08, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Yes, it is a real user, it's just someone else stuck a redirect on the userpage. This could cause quite a bit of confusion should someone click an old link toUser:Jonathan inUser:Jonathan W's signature, and get sent to the wrong account. As such, I'm inclined to reject this request. Opinions? --Deskana(apples)00:10, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well using other people's userspace as a convenient redirect doesn't seem legitimate to me. I could redirectUser:Will orUser:WJB to my userspace but it would seem rather improper. I would propose a brief note at the top of the userpage: "This isUser:Jonathan, you may be looking forUser:Jonathan W who signs as.." which should avoid confusion. I don't like the idea of sanctioning this sort of hijacking of other people's userspace. Note that Jonathan W has not edited since February and edited rarely in the 6 months before that.WjBscribe00:14, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. Convenient userpage rdirects just cause confusion. --Anonymous DissidentTalk00:19, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't sanction the hijacking either; infact, I just read this message as I'd deleted the redirect. There are, however, repercussions to the redirect. I think a link at the top of the userpage is a good idea... it didn't occur to me before. I'd be happy to rename, should Jonjonbt agree to a note at the top of his new userpage. --Deskana(apples)00:23, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I note that your account is very new and that all your edits to the project are in connection with this request - usurpation is generally reserved for established users so we can make sure common names will be put to good use. If this request is declined on that basis, you may wish to ask again in a few months when you have made more contributions to Wikipedia.WjBscribe07:50, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ceiling Cat

[edit]

This is an account used by a vandal, named after the popular internet meme. Ceiling_Cat is probably my most common IRC nickname, and I've been confused with the vandal on a number of occasions. I'd like to usurp the account, and redirect the userpage touser:Raul654Raul65418:24, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Target has no deleted edits. Given how well known Raul654's IRC name is, it seems likely the account was created to impersonate or harass. It wouldn't be a valid username for anyone else (due to connection with Raul) so I can't see any reason why Raul shouldn't usurp it. Though as the account is indefblocked and Raul doesn't paln to use it, why not just redirect its pages to his userspace and leave it blocked?WjBscribe18:37, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I may use it occasionally for humor value :), but I don't plan to do any substantial editing from it.Raul65418:43, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This seems like a reasonable solution, as long as we make a note somehow that Raul isn't the same person as the banned user so he doesn't get blocked as a recreated account --lucid18:52, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
