Whitfield Valley is alocal nature reserve on the northern fringe ofStoke-on-Trent, England.
The reserve, of area 91.15 hectares (225.2 acres), was designated a local nature reserve (LNR) in 1991. It is owned and managed byStoke-on-Trent City Council.[1]
Ford Green Brook flows south through the site, betweenChell andBradeley to the west andNorton le Moors to the east. At the northern end is the former spoil heap of theChatterley Whitfield colliery; in the south is Ford Green. Thereed bed at Ford Green is aSite of Special Scientific Interest.[1]
Within the reserve there isgrassland,heathland, lakes and scattered trees.[1][2]
The former colliery spoil heap is a site forBirdsfoot trefoil, which supportsdingy skipper butterflies. In the grassland,skylarks andgrey partridges may be seen. The lakes are a habitat forwater birds.[1]
