Whippany (/hwɪpəni/WHIP-ə-nee) is anunincorporated community andcensus-designated place (CDP)[5] inHanover Township,Morris County, New Jersey, United States.[6] As of the2020 census, it had a population of 8,863.[2]
Whippany's name is derived from the WhippanongNative Americans, a tribe that once inhabited the area.Whippanong meant "place of thewillows", named for the trees growing along the banks of theWhippany River.[7]

TheWhippany River is an important part of theMunsee,colonial, andindustrial history of the town.[8]
Circa 1000 CE, the area, along with most ofnorthern New Jersey, was inhabited by theMunseeLenape people. Circa 1500, all of New Jersey was part of theLenapehoking,[9] the homelands of the Lenape.
TheMunsee harvestedmussels from theWhippany River.Arrowheads found in Munsee encampments throughout the nearbyWashington Valley suggest that they huntedwolf,elk, andwild turkey forgame.[8]
The earliestEuropean settlers to live along the Whippany River can be traced back to 1685. The river was an integral part of life in the area; it providedwater power for the various mills which developed in the town.[10]
The Seeing Eye, the firstguide dog school for the blind in the United States, was located in Whippany between 1931 and 1966, before moving to its current campus in nearbyMorris Township.[11]
Whippany is in eastern Morris County and occupies most of the eastern part of Hanover Township. It is bordered to the west, acrossInterstate 287, byCedar Knolls, also in Hanover Township. Whippany is bordered to the north byParsippany–Troy Hills Township, to the east byEast Hanover Township, to the south by the Black Meadows Preserve andMorristown Municipal Airport, and to the southwest byMorris Township, Morris Township.Morristown, thecounty seat, is 5 miles (8 km) to the southwest.
According to theU.S. Census Bureau, the Whippany CDP has a total area of 5.74 square miles (14.87 km2), of which 5.61 square miles (14.53 km2) are land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 km2), or 2.21%, are water.[1] TheWhippany River flows through the center of town, leading northeast to join thePassaic River nearPine Brook. The river is protected by theWhippany River Watershed Action Committee.
Whippany first appeared as acensus designated place in the2020 U.S. census.[12]

After the fire he went to Whippany, New Jersey. Later he returned to this place, engaged in the saw mill business and later rebuilt the mill and conducted a large blanket manufacturing business.
