TheWestern Australia Women cricket team, previously known asWestern Fury, is the women's representativecricket team for theAustralian State ofWestern Australia. They play their home games at WACA West Ground,Perth. They compete in theWomen's National Cricket League (WNCL), the premier50-over women's cricket tournament in Australia. They previously played in the now-defunctAustralian Women's Twenty20 Cup andAustralian Women's Cricket Championships.

History

1934–1935: Early history

Western Australia's first recorded match was a draw againstEngland in a two-day tourist match from 24 to 26 November 1934.[1]

1936–1996: Australian Women's Cricket Championships

Western Australia joined theAustralian Women's Cricket Championships for the 1936–37 tournament.[2] They continued to play in the Championships until its final season in 1995–96.[3][4] Western Australia won the title on one occasion, in 1986–87.[5]

1996–present: Women's National Cricket League and Twenty20 Cup

Western Australia joined the newly-establishedWNCL in1996–97.[6] They have won the title once, in2019–20.[7] Their best finish in theAustralian Women's Twenty20 Cup was runners-up in2012–13, when they lost the final toNew South Wales by 5 wickets.[8]

On 29 July 2019, theWestern Australian Cricket Association announced that the name of the team would change from Western Fury to simply Western Australia Women, alongside a similar change to the men's team which dropped its "Warriors" nickname.[9]

Grounds

Western Australia have used a number of grounds over the years. Their first recorded home match againstEngland in 1934 was played at theWACA Ground,Perth. Historically they have played the vast majority of their home matches at various grounds in Perth. Outside Perth, they have played sporadic matches in other locations includingGeraldton,Crawley,Fremantle andBaldivis.[10][11][12][13][14]

After the inception of theWNCL in 1996, Western Australia began playing regular matches at the WACA Ground. They have also continued to use other grounds, most regularlyMurdoch University West Oval in Perth. Their two2019–20 WNCL home games and their four2020–21 WNCL home games were played at the WACA Ground.[12][13] They did not play any home matches in the2021–22 WNCL due toCOVID-19 restrictions.[15] In the2022–23 WNCL, they returned to playing all of their home matches at the WACA Ground.[12]
