TheWest Central Railway (abbreviatedWCR), one of the 19zones of theIndian Railways, came into existence on 1 April 2003. It is headquartered atJabalpur.[2] It was created by taking away two divisions namelyBhopal division andJabalpur division from central railways and one division namelyKota division fromWestern Railway zone. The WCR zone provides rail route coverage to the west central region ofIndia. Most of its route is in the states ofMadhya Pradesh andRajasthan with a very little portion in the state ofUttar Pradesh.
On 1 April 2003, the West Central Railway was reconstituted from parts of Central Railway and Western Railway by allocatingJabalpur andBhopal divisions of theCentral Railway zone (CR) and the reorganizedKota of theWestern Railway zone (WR) to WCR.[3]

The zone serves eastern & centralMadhya Pradesh, southernUttar Pradesh, and northeasternRajasthan state. It contains theTuglakabad (TKD) locomotive shed, which belongs toKota Division of WCR but is situated in the Northern Railways territory.[4] WCR meets Northern Railway atMathura, Western Railway at Nagda, North Western Railway atChittorgarh, Central Railway at Khandwa and Itarsi, North Central Railway at Bina and Manikpur, South East Central Railway at Katni and East Central Railway at Singaroli stations.[5]
