West Beckwith Mountain is aprominent mountain summit in theWest Elk Mountains range of theRocky Mountains of North America. The 12,185-foot (3,714 m) peak is located in theWest Elk Wilderness ofGunnison National Forest, about 16.5 miles (26.5 km) southwest ofCrested Butte inGunnison County, Colorado, United States.[2][1]
West Beckwith Mountain is alaccolith, formed whenmagmaintruded intoMancos Shale some 30 million years ago. Since then, erosion has removed the softer, overlyingsedimentary rock, exposing the more resistantigneous rock. West Beckwith Mountain is one of over a dozen laccoliths in the West Elk and adjacentElk Mountains.[3][4]
