Warren Templeton Treadgold (born April 30, 1949, Oxford, England) is an American historian and specialist inByzantine studies. He is the National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Byzantine Studies atSaint Louis University.

Treadgold holds anAB fromHarvard University (1970) and aPhD from the same university (1977).^[1][2] He wrote his AB thesis onArianism as a force in politics, 429–586^[3] under the guidance ofAngeliki Laiou andCaroline Walker Bynum.^[4] Theadvisors of his PhD thesis onThe nature of the Bibliotheca of Photius^[5] wereIhor Ševčenko andHerbert Bloch.^[4]

He initially held a series ofvisiting lectureships andresearch fellowships: atUniversity of California, Los Angeles (1977–78),Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (1978–80),Stanford University (1980–82), andFree University of Berlin (1982–83).^[4]

From 1983 to 1988 he was anassistant professor of history atHillsdale College inMichigan. In 1988, he joined theFlorida International University inMiami, where he was promoted to professor of history. He was a visiting fellow atAll Souls College, Oxford in 1989 and a fellow at theWoodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in 1996–1997. In 1997, he left Florida forSaint Louis University and has taught there since.^[2]

He is a member of theAmerican Historical Association, theSociety for Classical Studies, theMedieval Academy of America, and theAmerican Association of University Professors.^[2]

His interest in the political, economic, military, social, and cultural history of theByzantine Empire extends to the Byzantine historians themselves.^[1]

He is the son ofDonald W. Treadgold [pl], aSovietologist, and Alva Treadgold.^[2] He has been married since 1982 to Irina Andreescu-Treadgold, anart historian.^[2]

He is aRoman Catholic and has been aRepublican since at least 1988.^[2][6]
