Warner Classics is theclassical music arm ofWarner Music Group. The label began issuing new recordings under theWarner Classics banner in 1991.[2] The company also includes theErato Records andTeldec Records labels. Based in France,[3]Warner Classics also distributes the Elektra Nonesuch, Finlandia, Lontano, NVC Arts, Warner Apex, Warner Elatus and Warner Fonit labels.[4]
What was then known asWarner Bros.-Seven Arts, which ownedWarner Bros. Records andAtlantic Records, acquiredElektra Records in 1969 which included Elektra'sNonesuch Records classical music label. This led to the formation of WEA, the forerunner ofWarner Music Group. Nonesuch is now part of Warner Records. WEA acquiredTeldec Records in 1988.Warner Classics was formed in 1991. The renamedWarner Music Group acquiredErato Records in 1992.Warner Music Group acquired the classical video company NVC Arts in 1994.[5]
The label developed a larger profile in 2013 when it absorbedEMI Classics (includingPye Records' classical music catalogue) with that label's output absorbed into theWarner Classics label and the co-ownedVirgin Classics absorbed intoErato Records.[6]
