Wakool Shire was alocal government area in theRiverina region ofNew South Wales, Australia. The Shire was located between theMurray River and theMurrumbidgee River and adjacent to theSturt Highway. Towns in the Shire areBarham,Moulamein,Tooleybuc,Wakool andKoraleigh.

The lastmayor of Wakool Shire wasClr. Neil Gorey, anunaligned politician.

Amalgamation

A2015 review of local government boundaries by theNSW GovernmentIndependent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal recommended that the Wakool Shire merge with theMurray Shire to form a new council with an area of 11,865 square kilometres (4,581 sq mi) and support a population of approximately 11,500.[2]

Wakool Shire was abolished on 12 May 2016 and along with neighbouringMurray Shire, the area was included in theMurray River Council local government area.[3]

Composition and election method

At the time of dissolution, Wakool Shire Council was composed of sixcouncillors electedproportionally as three separatewards, each electing two councillors. All councillors were elected for a fixed four-year term of office. The mayor was elected by the councillors at the first meeting of the council. The most recent election was held on 8 September 2012. In the B and C Wards, only two candidates, being those below, nominated for election. There being no additional candidates, the election for these wards was uncontested.[4] In the A Ward, an election was held. The makeup of the council is as follows:[5][6][7]
