WRXK-FM (96.1MHz) is acommercialradio stationlicensed toBonita Springs, Florida, and broadcasting to theFort Myers-Naples-Marco Island area ofSouthwest Florida. It airs amainstream rockformat branded as "96 K-Rock". It carriesMiami Dolphins football games during theNFL season. The studios are on South Tamiami Trail inEstero.
WRXK-FM is aClass C FM station. It has aneffective radiated power (ERP) of 100,000watts, the maximum for most stations. Thetransmittertower is off Carter Road inCorkscrew, Florida.[2] WRXK-FM broadcasts usingHD Radio technology. Itsdigital subchannel airssports radio programming fromsister stationWBCN770 AM.
The stationsigned on the air on September 1, 1974; 50 years ago (September 1, 1974).[3] Its originalcall sign was WLEQ with the branding "96 Super Q". It carried aTop 40 format. It originally broadcast on 95.9MHz and was only powered at 3,000 watts, a fraction of its current output. In 1980, the station was re-branded as "Q-96", and affiliated with theSatellite Music Network.
In 1986, the station switched frequencies from 95.9 to 96.1 coupled with a power increase to 100,000 watts. This allowed it to cover much ofSouthwest Florida. It switched to amainstream rock format. It changed its call sign to WRXK and was rebranded as "96 K-Rock".
On February 13, 2012, WRXK-FM changed its format tohot talk, branded as "96 K-Rock, Talk That Rocks". But it returned to rock on June 17, 2013, in preparation for sister station 99X's flip toESPN programming on June 20.[4]
In the 2010s, WRXK-FM carried thesyndicatedBubba the Love Sponge show in morningdrive time. On July 9, 2018, the Beasley Broadcast Group parted ways with Bubba. WRXK-FM began airingDave and Chuck the Freak. That show is based at co-ownedWRIF inDetroit and is syndicated toBoston,Tampa and other markets.
