WQGN-FM (105.5MHz "Q105") is acommercial radio stationlicensed toGroton, Connecticut, and serving theNew London–Groton area. It broadcasts acontemporary hit radioformat and is owned byCumulus Media. WQGN carries severalnationally syndicated shows includingThe Kidd Kraddick Morning Show and theCarson Daly Top 30. Its studios and offices are located on Governor Winthrop Boulevard in New London.
WQGN-FM has aneffective radiated power (ERP) of 3,000 watts. The station'stransmitter is on Briar Hill Road near Gungywamp Road.[2] It shares the sametower assister stationWXLM (980 AM).
In 1971, the stationsigned on as WSUB-FM.[3] It was the FM counterpart to WSUB (980 AM, nowWXLM). Both stations were owned by the Southeastern Connecticut Broadcasting Company. The "SUB" in the stations'call signs stood for "submarine", because shipbuilding is a major industry in the area.
At first, WSUB-FMsimulcast theMiddle of the Road (MOR) programming heard on the AM station. After a few years, it began playingTop 40 music separate from WSUB 980 AM. The station started with theTM studiossyndicated stereo rock format. To give it a different identity, the call sign was changed to WQGN-FM on August 6, 1979. The station became known as Q 105.
In the early 2000s, WQGN and WSUB were owned byCitadel Broadcasting. Citadel merged withCumulus Media on September 16, 2011.[4]
