WNML-FM (99.1FM, "99.1 The Sports Animal") is a commercialradio station licensed toFriendsville, Tennessee, United States, and serving theKnoxville metropolitan area. Owned byCumulus Media, it features asports format simulcast withWNML (990 AM). The studios and offices are on Old Kingston Pike in theSequoyah Hills section of West Knoxville.

Thetransmitter is on Nicole Court, offU.S. Route 411, inMaryville.

History

The station signed on the air on January 5, 1989.[3] Its original call sign was WLOD-FM, and its city of license wasLoudon, Tennessee. It was owned by Dick Broadcasting, with Allen Dick as thechief executive officer. In 1991, WNOX-AM-FM andWIVK-FM were acquired byCitadel Broadcasting, which later merged with current owner Cumulus Media. WLOD-FM changed its call letters to WNOX-FM.

Over the years, formats includedsmooth jazz ("Double 99", simulcast with WNDD) andurban adult contemporary (X-99). Later, WNOX-FM started simulcastingtalk radio stationWNOX 990 AM.[4][5]

Programming

Most programming comes fromWestwood One Sports. WNML-AM-FM are the flagship stations for both theTennessee SmokiesSouthern League Baseball radio network and theUniversity of TennesseeVol Network. The stations also carryKnoxville Ice Bears games in theSouthern Professional Hockey League.
