History

[edit]

The station signed on the air in 1946.[2] It originally was a daytimer, required to go off the air at night. In the 1960s and 70s, it aired amiddle of the road (MOR) format, playing popular adult artists with news and sports. It was a network affiliate of theMutual Broadcasting System.

The station was assigned the call sign "WMIX" by theFederal Communications Commission (FCC).[3] Withers Broadcasting registered the "WMIX" branding as aregistered trademark,[4] which prevents other stations, many of them carrying some sort ofMix FM format, from using WMIX as a branding without permission.

In the early 2000s, WMIX broadcast atalk radioformat, branded "News Talk 940," plusadult standards music in the evening and overnight.[5] Syndicated talk programming includedThe Rush Limbaugh Show, TheJim Bohannon Show, plusadult standards music blocks hosted by Chick Watkins, Jeff Rollins and Don K. Reid fromDial Global's "America's Best Music" radio network.[6] The station later decided to end the news/talk programming, instead airing "America's Best Music" around the clock.
