WAFC (590AM, "Pure Country") is acommercial radio station inClewiston, Florida, servingHendry County. It airs aclassic countryradio format and is owned by Glades Media Group.[2] It also carriesUniversity of FloridaGators football games. The studios and offices are on North Park Street inOkeechobee.

By day, WAFC is powered at 930 watts. But to protect other stations on590 AM from interference, at night it reduces power to 470 watts. Programming is also heard on threeFM translators in Clewiston (100.5),LaBelle (105.1) andBelle Glade (92.5).

History

The stationsigned on the air on February 16, 1988; 37 years ago (1988-02-16).[3] It has always had the WAFCcall sign and has always been owned by Glades Media. It came on the air nine years after itssister station debuted, at the time 106.3 WAFC-FM Clewiston and today 106.1WJNX-FM Okeechobee.

In its early years, the station playedRegional Mexican music with the brandingRadio Fiesta.[4][5] It also spent time playingcountry music, handing off the Regional Mexican format to its co-owned FM station.

In the 2010s, WAFC carried thenationally syndicated "True Oldies Channel" fromCumulus Media Networks. On June 30, 2014, Cumulus Media stopped distributing the TOC network. At that point, WAFC switched toWestwood One's "Classic Hits Radio" service.

On December 26, 2018, WAFC changed its format fromclassic hits to classic country music. It took the branding "Pure Country WAFC".[6]
