American astrophysicist
William David Arnett (born 1940) is a Regents Professor of Astrophysics atSteward Observatory ,University of Arizona ,[ 1] known for his research onsupernova explosions, the formation ofneutron stars orblack holes by gravitational collapse, and thesynthesis of elements in stars ; he is author of the monographSupernovae and Nucleosynthesis which deals with these topics.[ 2] Arnett pioneered the application of supercomputers to astrophysical problems, including neutrino radiation hydrodynamics,[ 3] [ 4] nuclear reaction networks,[ 5] instabilities and explosions,[ 6] [ 7] [ 8] supernova light curves,[ 9] [ 10] and turbulent convective flow in two[ 11] and three dimensions.[ 12]
Arnett received his BS degree from theUniversity of Kentucky in 1961 and his MS and PhD degrees in physics fromYale University in 1963 and 1965, advised byA. G. W. Cameron . After postdoctoral work withW. A. Fowler at theCalifornia Institute of Technology andFred Hoyle at the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy (nowInstitute of Astronomy ) ofCambridge University , he served briefly on the faculties ofRice University (working withDonald Clayton ),University of Texas andUniversity of Illinois before becoming the B. and E. Sunny Distinguished Service Professor at theUniversity of Chicago and then Regents Professor[ 13] at theUniversity of Arizona .
