Votorantim (Portuguese pronunciation:[votoɾɐ̃ˈtʃĩ]) is a city located at the southwest ofSão Paulo State inBrazil. It is part of theMetropolitan Region of Sorocaba.[2] The population is 123,599 (2020 est.).[3] The city is located about 100 km (62 mi) away from thecapital of the state. It has 147 km2 (57 sq mi) ofrural area, 30 km2 (12 sq mi) ofurban area and a total area of 183.52 km2 (70.86 sq mi).[4]
State Law No. 8,092 of February 28, 1964, separated thedistrict of Votorantim from the municipality of Sorocaba, elevating it to the category of municipality. It is the largest cement producer in Brazil. It also has a privileged geographical location, since it isconurbated withSorocaba and, therefore, close to its road network, connected to large national and regional centers, such asSão Paulo andCampinas.[5]
It is located in a mountainous region and it has an average altitude of 557 m (1,827 ft). The city has a tropical weather and annual average temperature is 20 degrees. It makes borders with the cities ofSorocaba,Piedade,Ibiúna,Salto de Pirapora andAlumínio. It has important access ways to highways such as Castello Branco (SP-280), Raposo Tavares (SP-270), João Leme dos Santos (SP-264) and SP-79 which binds the city to the south coast of the State.
In telecommunications, the city was served byTelecomunicações de São Paulo.[6] In July 1998, this company was acquired by Telefónica, which adopted theVivo brand in 2012. The company is currently an operator of cell phones, fixed lines, internet (fiber optics/4G) and television (satellite and cable).[7]
