Volker Banfield (born 9 May 1944,Oberaudorf, Bavaria) is a German classicalpianist.[1]
He studied at the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie inDetmold, beginning at age 14. Afterward he moved to the United States and studied at theJuilliard School (withAdele Marcus) and at theUniversity of Texas (withLeonard Shure). He then returned to live in Germany and toured extensively. His repertory emphasized late19th century and20th century music featuring works byBartók,Debussy,Messiaen,Prokofiev,Rachmaninoff, andScriabin. The contemporary composersGyörgy Ligeti andDetlev Müller-Siemens have dedicated works to him. He has also become identified with the works ofSchumann.[1] He held a professorship at theHochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg until 2009.
He recorded four CDs forWergo, and additional albums forCPO, including a performance ofFerruccio Busoni'sPiano Concerto together with theBavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra which was awarded aDiapason d'Or, and the world-premiere recording ofHans Pfitzner's Piano Concerto.[2]
