Avoiceless velar lateral fricative is a rarespeech sound. As one element of anaffricate, it is found for example inZulu andXhosa (seevelar lateral ejective affricate). However, a simple fricative has only been reported from a few languages in theCaucasus andNew Guinea.
In New Guinea, some of theChimbu–Wahgi languages such asMelpa,Middle Wahgi, andNii, have a velar lateral, which they write with a double-bar el (Ⱡ, ⱡ). One speaker ofKuman was found to have the voiceless fricative insyllable coda position as anallophone of a voiced velar lateral/ʟ/.[1]
TheextIPA has the letter ⟨𝼄⟩ for this sound. It was added to Unicode in 2021.
