Avoiced velar lateral fricative is a rareconsonantal sound used in some spoken languages. The symbol in theInternational Phonetic Alphabet that traditionally represents this sound is ⟨ʟ̝⟩, though in theextIPA, ⟨𝼄̬⟩ is preferred.

Features of a voiced velar lateral fricative:

• Itsmanner of articulation isfricative, which means it is produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causingturbulence.
• Itsplace of articulation isvelar, which means it is articulated with the back of thetongue (the dorsum) at thesoft palate.
