Avoiced palatal lateral flap is a rare type ofconsonantal sound, used in some spokenlanguages. There is no dedicated symbol in theInternational Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound. However, the symbol for apalatal lateral approximant with abreve denotingextra-short ⟨ʎ̆⟩, or equivalently ⟨ʎ̮⟩ to avoid a clash with the ascender.[1]
Features of a voiced palatal lateral flap:
TheIlgar language of Australia has a palatal lateral flap as well asalveolar andretroflex lateral flaps. However, a phonetic palatal flap has not been shown to bephonemic.[2]
