The Design (originally known asViolent By Design orVBD) was avillainousprofessional wrestlingstable inImpact Wrestling. The stable was originally led byEric Young, and later byDeaner. The group also consisted ofJoe Doering andRhino, and laterKon,Alan Angels, andSami Callihan under Deaner's leadership.[1][2][3] They are formertwo-timeImpact World Tag Team Champions.

The stable was formed on November 14, 2020 at theTurning Pointevent, where Doering debuted asEric Young'senforcer.[4][5] The group would later be expanded with the additions of Deaner[6] andRhino.[7] Rhino was kicked out of the stable in September 2021. After Joe Doering's brain cancer returned, he would go on hiatus from professional wrestling in September 2022. After weeks of teasing new members,Angels andKon would join in November 2022. In December 2022, Deaner would become the leader, withCallihan joining for a short time.

History

[edit]

Beginnings

[edit]

At theSlammiversaryevent on July 18, 2020,Eric Young made his surprise return toImpact Wrestling as a surprise participant in a match for the vacantImpact World Championship, but he lost the match.[8] He would win the title in September,[9] only to lose it a month later toRich Swann atBound for Glory.[10]

Shortly after losing the title,Joe Doering debuted as Young's enforcer atTurning Point and attacked The Deaners (Cody Deaner andCousin Jake).[4][5] During the following weeks, Young feuded with Deaner andRhino and this resulted in a match between Deaner and Young on the December 8 episode ofImpact!, which Young won,[11] and a match atFinal Resolution, between Young and Rhino, which Young won after Deaner turned on his partners and joined Young.[12][13]

On the January 5, 2021 episode ofImpact!, Deaner appeared in a new look with a bald shaved head, trimmed beard, and the modified name Deaner.[14] AtHard To Kill, the trio was officially namedViolent By Design(VBD), as they defeated Dreamer, Rhino, and Jake in anOld School Rules match.[15] On the January 19 episode ofImpact!, Young defeated Rhino and proceeded to injure him, taking him out of action.[16] Subsequently, Cousin Jake would change his ring name to Jake Something and defeated Deaner atNo Surrender.[17] AtSacrifice, Deaner and Doering defeatedChris Sabin andJames Storm in a tag team match after Rhino attacked Sabin, thus joining VBD in the process.[18] AtHardcore Justice, VBD defeated Team Dreamer (Eddie Edwards, Rich Swann,Willie Mack andTrey Miguel) in an eight-manHardcore War match.[19]

Tag Team Champions

[edit]

VBD was scheduled to take on Chris Sabin, Eddie Edwards, James Storm and Willie Mack in an eight-man tag team match atRebellion but Young suffered an injury and was replaced by the debutingW. Morrissey.[20] Morrisey and VBD went on to win the match.[21] On the May 20 episode ofImpact!, Rhino invoked hisCall Your Shot Gauntlet championship privilege as he and Doering defeatedFinJuice (David Finlay andJuice Robinson) to win theWorld Tag Team Championship.[22] On the June 3 episode ofImpact!, Young declared the titles belonged to the group collectively, and as VBD leader, he would decide who defended them, thus he and Deaner would also be given a share of the titles under theFreebird Rule.[3][23] AtAgainst All Odds, Doering defeatedAll Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) rivalSatoshi Kojima, and Deaner and Rhino retained the tag team titles againstDecay (Black Taurus andCrazzy Steve).[24] On July 17, atSlammiversary, they lost the titles toThe Good Brothers (Doc Gallows andKarl Anderson) in a four-way tag team match that also involved Rich Swann and Willie Mack, andFallah Bahh andNo Way.[25]

On August 20, atEmergence, they failed to regain the tag titles in a three-way tag team match that also involved Swann and Mack.[26] After that, Young blamed Rhino for failing to recapture the titles[27] and they tortured him to cure him of "the sickness".[28][29] On the September 16 episode ofImpact!, after losing to Decay, Rhino was attacked by Young, Deaner, and Doering, thus kicking him out of the VBD.[30][31] On the September 30 episode ofImpact, Rhino's former tag team partnerHeath saved Rhino from a potential attack by VBD, and Heath then looked to give Rhino a hug afterwards, but Rhino would walk out of the ring.[32][33][34] In the following weeks, Rhino was not sure which side to take,[35][36] and Heath asks Impact EVPScott D'Amore to make a match pitting him and anyone else against Violent By Design atBound for Glory, which was accepted.[37][38][39] At Bound for Glory, Rhino appeared as Heath's tag team partner, where they defeated VBD.[40][41] On November 20, atTurning Point, Doering and a recovered Young defeated Heath and Rhino in a rematch.[42]

On January 8, 2022, atHard To Kill, VBD teamed with The Good Brothers to take on Eddie Edwards, Rich Swann, Willie Mack, Heath and Rhino in a 10-man Hardcore War match in a losing effort.[43][44] In February, they continued their partnership with The Good Brothers during their feud withBullet Club (Jay White and theGuerillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga andTanga Loa)), attacking them from behind after a match.[45][46] AtNo Surrender, Young lost to White in a match of faction leaders.[47] On March 5, atSacrifice, VBD defeated The Good Brothers to win the Impact World Tag Team Championship for the second time.[48] AtRebellion, they successfully retained the tag titles in anEight-Team Elimination Challenge.[49] On May 7, atUnder Siege, VBD lost the titles toThe Briscoes (Jay Briscoe andMark Briscoe).[50] On the May 12 episode ofImpact!, Young won aGauntlet for the Gold to get anImpact World Championship match againstJosh Alexander atSlammiversary.[51] At the event, Young failed to defeat Alexander for the title.[52] On July 1, atAgainst All Odds, Doering fought Alexander for the title in a losing effort, thus ending Doering's undefeated streak in Impact Wrestling.[53]

In September, Doering would go on hiatus from professional wrestling after his brain cancer returned.[54][55] On the November 3 episode ofImpact!,Angels andKon joined the stable.[56]

Deaner's takeover and dissolution

[edit]

On the December 1 episode ofImpact, Deaner defeated Young in acinematic prison fight (where it was implied Deaner stabbed him with a shiv) after Young convinced him to do it when Deaner hesitated, thus becoming the new leader of the group (in reality, he departed the company upon the expiry of his contract).[57] The following week, Deaner, Kon, and Angels renamed their group The Design.[58][59]

After spending the bulk of December feuding with the group, on the January 12, 2023 episode ofImpact,Sami Callihan decided to join The Design, having Deaner shave his head as initiation and being renamed simply as Callihan.[60] On April 16 atRebellion, Callihan turned on The Design by hitting Deaner with a baseball bat.[61][62]

On February 1, 2024, Deaner officially dissolved The Design, stating that it was his attempt to resurrect VBD, but no matter what he did, he couldn't bring it back to life. He lost a match toPCO and was attacked byKon right after.[63][64]
