Vincent J. Sombrotto is an American formerlacrosse player who played collegiate lacrosse atHofstra University and represented the United States in international competition. An All-American at Hofstra, he was later inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame. Sombrotto was a four-timeWorld Lacrosse Championship gold medalist as a member of the United States men's national team, competing in four World Championship tournaments.[1][2]
Sombrotto grew up inPort Washington, New York, and attendedChaminade High School inMineola, New York, where he played high school lacrosse before enrolling at Hofstra University.[2][3]
Sombrotto playedlacrosse at Hofstra University during the late 1970s. In 1980, he earnedUnited States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Second Team All-American honors after scoring 37 goals and recording 17 assists. He served as a co-captain for the Hofstra Pride men's lacrosse team and was later inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame in recognition of his collegiate career.[1]
Sombrotto represented the United States in international lacrosse competition as a member of fourU.S. men's national teams at the World Lacrosse Championships in1982,1986,1990, and1994. He won gold medals with Team USA during his international career and was named to the All-World Team at the 1982 World Lacrosse Championship.[2]
Following his collegiate career, Sombrotto played club and professional lacrosse in the United States. He competed for several championship-winning club teams and played professionally for theNew York Saints and theLong Island Lizards. He remained active in high-level lacrosse for many years following his international career.[2]
