TheVilla Belgiojoso Bonaparte, also known asVilla Reale and formerly calledVilla Comunale, is a palace inMilan, inLombardy in northern Italy. It was built between 1790 and 1796 as the residence of CountLudovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso.[1][2][3] The villa is inNeoclassical style, and was designed byLeopoldo Pollack. The main entrance is on via Palestro, facing theGiardini Pubblici ofPorta Venezia, the eastern gate of the city.
During theKingdom of Italy it became the residence of ViceroyEugène de Beauharnais and his family.
In 1920 the villa came under the ownership of theComune of Milan; in 1921 it became the home of theGalleria d'Arte Moderna.[4]
Beside the villa is thePadiglione d'Arte Contemporanea, an exhibition space forcontemporary art, which was built in 1955 on the site of the former stables of the palace, destroyed bywartime bombing.[5]
The gardens of the villa, inEnglish style with anartificial lake, were laid out byLeopoldo Pollack.[6]
