Vietnam first competed in theOlympic Games in1952 as theState of Vietnam. After thePartition of Vietnam in 1954, only theRepublic of Vietnam (successor of the State of Vietnam) competed in the Games, sending athletes to every Summer Olympics between1956 and1972.

Since the reunification of Vietnam in 1976, they have competed as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, attending every Olympics from1980 onwards with the exception of1984. The present Vietnam Olympic Committee was formed in 1976 and recognized by theInternational Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1979. Vietnam has never competed in theWinter Olympics.

Vietnam won its first medal at the2000 Summer Games inSydney, whenTrần Hiếu Ngân took home a silver inTaekwondo in theWomen's -57 kg category. Vietnam won its first gold medal at the2016 Games inRio de Janeiro, whenshooterHoàng Xuân Vinh was victorious in theMen's 10m air pistol event.

With a lack of investment in competing in the Olympics,[1] Vietnam has sent an average of only around 12 athletes per game until Tokyo 2020.[2]
