Vidurashwatha is a village located in theGauribidanurtaluk ofChikkaballapur district in the state ofKarnataka,India. Situated near the Karnataka–Andhra Pradesh border and about 6 km from Gauribidanur, it played a significant role in theIndian independence movement.[1]
The nameVidurashwatha is derived from that of a bigAshwatha (sacred fig) tree located in this village.[2] According to a legend of the times ofMahabharata, this tree was planted byVidura, a courtier in the kingdom ofDhritarashtra; and hence the nameVidurashwatha.[3] In 2001, this ancient tree fell to the ground.[4]
Vidurashwatha is known as theJalianwalabagh ofsouthern India. Around 35 freedom fightersmartyred while hoisting the flag of the Indian National Congress flag here.[5][further explanation needed] Veera Saudha is built on the memory of this freedom movement.
