[edit]

Victoria Pedretti was born on March 23, 1995, inPhiladelphia. She is of Italian ancestry.[1] She was raised Jewish,[2][3] and had abat mitzvah. She was diagnosed withADHD when she was seven years old.[4] She first expressed an interest in musical theatre while attendingPennsbury High School inFairless Hills Where she was discovered for her talents.[5] She received herBachelor of Fine Arts at theCarnegie Mellon School of Drama inPittsburgh, where she said her professors advised her not to pursue acting.[6][7]

Career

[edit]

Pedretti began acting in 2014, having roles in twoshort films:Sole where she played the female protagonist, andUncovering Eden where she played Edie.[8][9]

In 2017, Pedretti was cast inMike Flanagan'sNetflix supernatural horror drama seriesThe Haunting of Hill House, in which she played Eleanor "Nell" Crain.[10] It was released in 2018 to critical acclaim, and became Pedretti'sbreakthrough role.[11] Chad Collins ofDread Central called her the "soul ofThe Haunting of Hill House", andLucy Mangan ofThe Guardian called her "scene-stealing".[12][13] Dakota Moss ofMovieWeb wrote: "Pedretti's emotions to the role add a horrifying realism to the character, and viewers can feel all of Nell's pain and anguish to the very end. This is one of the defining roles for Victoria Pedretti, and she's only getting started."[14] She receivedSaturn Award andMTV Award nominations for the role and was established as ascream queen.[15][16][17]

Pedretti auditioned for the role ofGuinevere Beck on the Netflix thriller seriesYou but did not land the part.[18][19][20] The directors later cast her asLove Quinn in the show'ssecond andthird seasons[21] after seeing her previous acting work and chemistry with her co-starPenn Badgley.[22][23][24][25] While filming during theCOVID-19 pandemic, the intimate scenes posed a challenge for Pedretti to film as "it took months to figure out how to do it safely. [...] We played a couple before, but it didn't just immediately come back after being in a global pandemic."[26] The second and third seasons were released in 2019 and 2021,[27][28] respectively, to critical acclaim.[29][30][31] For season two, writers atElle said Pedretti "delivered the perfect amount of spook and smolder to keep us on the edge of our seats for all ten episodes."[32] She was nominated for theMTV Movie Award for Best Villain.[33]

In 2019, Pedretti playedLeslie Van Houten inQuentin Tarantino's comedy-drama filmOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood,[34] which was her first role in a feature film and a commercial success.[35] She followed this starring as Evelyn Porter in the 2020pilot episode of the anthology seriesAmazing Stories.[36] She also appeared in the short filmThis is Not a Love Letter and played Katherine in the biographical-drama filmShirley.[37][38]

A follow up series toThe Haunting of Hill House was announced in 2019 with Pedretti cast in the leading role;[39] it was released asThe Haunting of Bly Manor in 2020 and saw Pedretti playing Danielle "Dani" Clayton.[40][41]Alan Sepinwall ofThe Hollywood Reporter wrote that "Her appealing vulnerability, and her talent for making the supernatural feel like something painfully real to Dani, do a lot of the heavy lifting this time around.[42] Katerina Daley ofScreen Rant said that her performance "has absolutely been a star-making one..."[43]Angelica Jade Bastién ofVulture magazine said Pedretti "has proven herself to be one of the most exciting young actors to watch".[44] She was nominated for aCritics' Choice Super Award[45][46] and wonBest Frightened Performance at the2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards.[47]

In 2021, Pedretti appeared in singer-songwriterKacey Musgraves'Star-Crossed: The Film,[48][49] a companion feature toMusgraves' album of the same name,[50][51] in acameo role as a woman participating in a heist. A clip from the film featuring Pedretti later served as the music video for Musgraves' song "Simple Times".[52][53] Also in 2021, she was announced to star in the filmLucky, based on thememoir of the same name,[54] in which she would be portraying writerAlice Sebold during her freshman year at Syracuse University.[55][56] However, the film was cancelled after losing its financing.[57]

Pedretti was announced in 2022 to be headlining theHuluoriginal seriesSaint X,[58][59] but she reportedly left the series due to creative differences, withAlycia Debnam-Carey replacing her in the lead role.[60]

In 2023, Pedretti played Irma Eckler inAva DuVernay's acclaimed biographical drama filmOrigin.[61][62][63] She also reprised the role of Love Quinn in thefourth season ofYou as acameo appearance.[64][65] Michelle Boyar ofScreen Rant opined that, because she appears briefly and has few lines, "You season 4 wasted Love’s cameo."[66]

In 2024, Pedretti starred as Angel in the thriller-drama filmPonyboi,[67] which was described as the "queer breakout" of that year'sSundance Film Festival.[68][69] On accepting the role, Pedretti said that "I think the most important films to be made are the ones that deal with subject matters that people aren't well-versed in and with characters they haven't seen before. This was an incredible opportunity for that to happen."[70] She also starred in the short filmsFall Risk andMerci, Poppy as Dylan and Poppy respectively.[71][72] That same year, she made herBroadway debut in theSam Gold directed adaptation of theHenrik Ibsen play,An Enemy of the People, at theCircle in the Square Theatre.[73] Gold said of her casting that "She worked really hard in auditions and won the part for proving herself a really strong state actor who could take direction and take [it] all on her shoulders..."[3] Greg Evans ofDeadline Hollywood believed Pedretti "is ready-made for her strong-willed, occasionally fretful, role".[74] She next headlined anOff-Broadway production of thePhilip Ridley playTender Napalm.[75]

Pedretti will next star inIf She Burns written and directed byAlex Wolff,[76]The Non-Actor written and directed by Eliza Callahan,[77] andThe Last Day directed byRachel Rose.[78] The lattermost is inspired byVirginia Woolf's 1925 novelMrs Dalloway.[79]

Artistry

[edit]

Pedretti has said her experience withThe Haunting of Hill House made her comfortable with playing darker roles in the horror and thriller genres, and that she has "got a knack for" them.[80] Laura Studarus ofShondaland says that Pedretti "carved out a niche in the horror and suspense genre" and also opined that she can be versatile.[81] For her performance inThe Haunting of Bly Manor, she citesTimothée Chalamet's acting in the filmCall Me by Your Name (2017) as an inspiration.[82] After her Broadway debut, Pedretti expressed an interest in continuing stage work, tellingInterview that "doing theater, it’s very ideal. I’d love to keep doing this."[83]

Personal life

[edit]

Pedretti currently resides in New York.[84] She briefly dated herYou co-starDylan Arnold in 2021, andFred Hechinger in 2024.[85][86] In 2025, she announced that she was engaged to photographer Ethan Delorenzo.[87]
