TheVia Flavia was an ancientRoman road which connectedTrieste (ancientTergeste) toDalmatia, running across theIstrian coast. It was constructed during the reign of emperorVespasian, in 78/79 AD.[1]
After Trieste, it crossed theRižana, theDragonja/Dragogna (Timavo) and, at Ponte Porton, the biggest Istrian river, theMirna/Quieto (Ningus). Then it reached theLimski Kanal/Canale Leme (Limes),Dvigrad Due Castelli,Bale (Valle),Vodnjan (Dignano) andPula/Pola (Pola), after which it turned towardsVisače (Nesactium), reaching theRaša/Arsa (Arsia) River, crossing it, and continuing as a local road throughLabin (Albona) andPlomin (Fianona) as far asKastav/Castua (Castra), where it joined at an angle with theVia Annia.
