Vestmenn (Westmen in English) was theOld Norse word for theGaels ofIreland andBritain, especially Ireland and Scotland.Vestmannaeyjar inIceland andVestmanna in theFaroe Islands take their names from it. The Norse who settled in Scotland and Ireland, known now as the "Norse–Gaels", called themselvesAustmenn "Eastmen", i.e. people who had come from the East (Scandinavia).
