TheVerucini were aGallic tribe dwelling in the inlands of southeasternProvence during theIron Age.
The Verucini are solely attested byPliny asVerucini in the 1st century AD.[1][2]
TheethnonymVerucini is a latinized form ofGaulishUerucinoi (sg.Uerucinos). It derives from the stemueru- ('large'), and is related to the personal namesUeru-cloetius, Ueru-clonis,Ueruccius, andUeruco.[3]
Pliny describes the territory of the Verucini as situated near theSuelteri (Saint-Tropez). They appear to have lived between theArgens andVerdon rivers, near modernDraguignan,Salernes, andAups.[4] Adeus Mars Veracinius is attested in the Adon pass (Les Mujouls). It was probably the protector deity of the Verucini, and perhaps also that of the travellers to this mountainous region.[5]
