Veniliornis is agenus of birds in the woodpecker familyPicidae. They are native to the Neotropics.
The genus was introduced by the French ornithologistCharles Lucien Bonaparte in 1854.[2] The wordVeniliornis combines the name of the Roman deityVenilia with theGreek wordornis meaning "bird".[3] Thetype species was designated as theblood-colored woodpecker (Veniliornis sanguineus) by the English zoologistGeorge Robert Gray in 1855.[4][5]
